What we do is simple and specific: we apply film to glass that is already there, so the room is cooler, the light less dazzling and the privacy greater. We do not replace windows, we do not touch frames and we do no building work. The surroundings here are wooded, and that changes the calculation. Shade from pines and other trees is dappled and shifts through the year - a window that looks shaded in June can be in full sun on an August afternoon. So during the survey we look not only at which way the window faces but also at how close the trees are to the house and how tall they are. Sometimes some of a house's windows do not need film at all, and that needs saying openly.
In terraced houses there is often the additional matter of opacity for side windows looking into a neighbour's garden or onto the shared driveway. There the usual choice is frosted film, which works regardless of light levels - in the evening too.

From Riga we drive to Baloži via the road network towards Ziepniekkalns and Ķekava. The distance is short, so we usually get there quickly and can fit more than one property into a day. The only real constraint is traffic: this direction tends to be congested during the morning and evening peaks, so we prefer to book visits for the middle of the day or early morning. We confirm the exact arrival time the day before, so you do not have to wait in all day.
Parking options vary by area. In apartment-block courtyards the spaces are often taken, and we need to get close to the stairwell, because rolls of film and tools cannot be carried far by hand. If you know of a space or have a permit, mention it on the call. In the newer detached-house streets and the more wooded lanes it is usually easier - you can pull up directly at the house.
In flats, the floor and whether there is a lift both matter. Higher floors without a lift do not make the job impossible, but carrying the materials up takes time, and it is better to know that beforehand than on the doorstep. In houses we check whether every window can be reached from the inside - roof windows, high-set windows and glazed terraces sometimes call for ladders.
The seasonal pattern is the same as across Greater Riga: the wave of enquiries begins in spring, when the sun starts to dazzle, and peaks before the summer heat. If you are planning the work for the start of summer, it is worth booking a couple of weeks ahead. We work in winter just the same - the film is applied indoors, and the season has no effect on the quality of the work.
During fitting we need about a metre of clear access to the window. We move plants, curtains and small items off the sill ourselves, but if there is a heavy piece of furniture in front of the window, it is better shifted before we arrive.
