Safety film is not armour. It is a tough film with a strong adhesive, and its value becomes apparent at precisely the moment the glass has already broken.
Ordinary window glass, when it breaks, splits into large pieces with razor-sharp edges. Toughened glass shatters into hundreds of small fragments. In both cases the danger comes not from the break itself but from what happens in the next second - the pieces fall onto the floor, onto the pavement or onto the people standing nearby.
Safety film for glass breaks that chain. The adhesive layer holds the pieces against the film, so the broken glass stays as a single sheet. What remains in the opening is a cracked but intact surface. That matters in two practical ways: the risk of injury falls, and the room or shop window stays sealed until the glass can be replaced. For a shop it means nobody has to stand guard over an empty opening overnight.
The second effect is time gained. Getting through a pane with film on it takes more than one blow. The glass cracks but stays where it is, and repeated blows are then needed, which take time and make noise. That is exactly why window film against burglars is such a common solution for street-level shops and offices.
We write this section deliberately, because a great deal is claimed about safety film that simply is not true. Film does not make glass unbreakable. Glass with film on it still breaks, and a sufficiently determined person with the right tool will eventually get through. The difference is in time and noise, not in absolute protection.
Nor does film replace an alarm, a security service or bars. It is one layer within an overall solution, and it buys extra minutes. In most cases those minutes are decisive, because an opportunistic thief is looking for a quick, quiet opening rather than a long job out on the street.
The third thing to understand is that film works together with whatever holds the glass in place. If the frame or the fixing is weak, a broken pane can fall out whole, film and all. We look at that during the measuring visit and tell you if the benefit in a particular spot will be smaller than you expect.
Film thickness is measured in mils. The thicker the film, the more energy is needed to break through it - and the more the material costs.

The thinnest of the safety films. Its main job is to hold the fragments. Suited to glass doors, internal partitions, office glazing and the windows of nurseries and schools, where the priority is preventing injury rather than resisting a break-in attempt.

The option most often chosen for commercial premises. As well as holding the fragments, it makes entry appreciably harder - after the first blow the glass cracks but stays in place. Suited to shop windows, street-level offices and entrance doors.

The thickest standard option. Used on especially large panes, exposed shop windows and places where the risk is higher or the glass sits far from any other protection. Installing it takes more time and more experience.
A thicker film is not automatically the better choice. It is stiffer, so applying it to small, subdivided or curved panes is harder, and the gain is often slight. Safety film is often combined with other functions. On shop windows it is paired with UV protection film so the stock does not fade; in offices with decorative film or a frosted band, which marks the glass at the same time. Standard 4 mil film is right where the main aim is to stop fragments scattering - glass office doors, partitions or the windows of a nursery, for example. 8 mil film is the usual choice for commercial premises and shop windows, where making forced entry harder also matters. 12 mil film goes on especially large or exposed panes. We recommend the most suitable option once we have seen the glass and where it sits.
Standard clear safety films barely change the appearance of the glass at all - from a distance they are not noticeable and the view is unaffected. Thicker films can produce a slight reflection or reduce light transmission a little. If you also want privacy or solar protection, tinted safety films are available that combine both functions.
Safety film is usually applied to the inside face, because that is the side on which fragments would put people at risk, and a blow struck from outside is resisted in the opposite direction. Film applied on the inside also lasts longer, as it is not exposed to rain, salt or swings in temperature. In certain cases - where there is no access to the glass from inside, for instance - we do the work from outside.
