Water doesn't stop at being beautiful. The surface of the Daugava and the reservoir reflects the sun upwards, and that light enters the window from below - under the roof overhang, under the balcony soffit, under the awning. A small town on the Daugava with hydropower installations, a railway and the A6 corridor. In the building stock, detached houses, blocks of flats and technical buildings stand side by side - and for each of them the windows have a different job to do.
The river and the reservoir aren't just a view. A water surface reflects light upwards at a low angle, and that angle is precisely the problem: a roof overhang, a balcony soffit and an awning block the light coming from above but not the light coming from below. The result is that a house with a perfectly good canopy is nevertheless bright and hot in the afternoon, and the cause is not in the sky but on the water.
Film solves the problem differently from a canopy, because it works across the whole plane of the glass regardless of the angle the light arrives from. The same applies to brightness at a desk by the window and to reflections on a screen, which on the river side tend to be more pronounced than on the street side.
One important point: in properties like these the windows are large precisely because of the view, and closing them off with blinds means losing the very reason the house was built there. So for the river side we usually propose a lighter solar control film or heat rejection film, which cuts the heat and the glare while leaving the view virtually untouched.
The other side is the road. The A6 and the railway run through the town and connect it to Ogre, Lielvārde and Riga, and part of the building stock stands right at the edge of this corridor. On the road side the job of the windows is the opposite of the river side: there it isn't the view that has to be preserved, but the fact that a stranger can look into the room that has to be dealt with.
A ground-floor flat or a room in a detached house beside the road is visible from outside during the day, and often the only remedy is curtains drawn all day long. Frosted film or blackout film solves this permanently and independently of the time of day - in the evening too, when the lights are on indoors. If the view out is needed after all, a split solution is used: the lower part of the glass frosted up to eye level, the upper part clear.
On roadside properties another frequent theme is the resilience of the glass. Safety film doesn't make glass unbreakable, but it holds the shards together if the glass is damaged, and that matters where there is a pedestrian area or a child's bedroom below the window.
Alongside the houses, the building stock of Ķegums also includes technical and energy-sector buildings, administrative premises and works blocks. In spaces like these the window problems differ from those of a domestic living room, and the choice of film is different too.
The most common task is glare on screens. In a room where someone has to look at a monitor all day, one window on the wrong side is enough to make working impossible by the afternoon. The second is the temperature in a room with a disproportionately large area of glass relative to the floor area - there the air conditioning runs constantly, and film reduces the load it has to deal with. The third is visual separation: glass partitions between a corridor and a working area, where light is needed but visibility isn't. The fourth, less often mentioned, is ultraviolet radiation. UV protection film substantially reduces this radiation, and visually the window hardly changes at all.

Before application the glass is cleaned thoroughly. This step determines the quality of the result more than anything else - dust under the film can't be put right later.

If the glass already carries old, yellowed or bubbling film, we take it off from €8/m². Old film has to come off before new film goes on - you don't apply over the top of it.
After application the film needs a few days for the adhesive layer to dry out completely. During that time small hazy patches or tiny water bubbles may be visible on the glass - that is a normal process and they disappear by themselves. Don't wash the windows during this period.

At detached houses access is usually simple - a yard to leave the van in, and the windows reachable from inside. In blocks of flats we need to know the floor and whether there is a lift, because a roll of film is long and not every stairwell is easy to turn it in. On technical sites we establish the passes and permitted working hours in advance.
On the season: film can be applied all year round, because the work happens inside the room. In summer demand is higher and the queues longer, so if the aim is specifically heat and glare, it is worth booking in spring. In winter the room has to be heated, because the adhesive only bonds properly at above-zero temperatures - in an unheated summer house or works building the job may have to be postponed.
