We apply film to architectural glass. Nothing is taken out, the frames stay where they are, and the room can be used again as soon as the work is done. In the private-house areas the problem is usually the opposite. There are no neighbours looking in from a house five metres away, but there are large glazed living rooms, roof lights and glazed terraces that overheat in summer. In the newer developments the glazed areas are strikingly large, and the trees in the garden have yet to grow tall enough to give any shade.
Here the subject is more often heat, and the fading of furniture, parquet and fabrics, and less often privacy. Where privacy is needed, it is usually only in specific spots - a bathroom window, a stairwell, or wherever the house stands close to the street.
This is the part of Salaspils that sets it apart from an ordinary residential suburb of Riga. In research and institutional buildings the demands on the glass are specific, and they come from what the rooms are used for rather than from taste.
In ground-floor offices and laboratories whose windows face a pedestrian area or a car park, privacy is often needed that doesn't depend on the time of day - frosted film or blackout film is the answer there. In rooms where people work at screens and microscopes all day, the main problem is reflection and brightness, and solar control film is what works. On large glazed areas in corridors, foyers and door side panels, where a lot of people pass through, we add safety film, which holds the shards together if the glass breaks. Warehouses, production plants and service buildings line the A6 and the railway corridor. In production and warehouse spaces there is height to account for as well - some of the glazing is above normal reach, so during the measuring visit we agree on ladders or a platform, and on whether the work happens during working hours or after them.
Salaspils stretches along the Daugava and the hydroelectric reservoir. In properties whose windows face the water, light behaves differently from the way it does in a block between buildings. The water surface reflects the sun at a low angle, and that reflected light arrives at eye level in the morning and evening hours - precisely when a high canopy or a roof overhang no longer helps. The result is brightness and glare on the screen even when the sun itself is already low.

We drive to Salaspils from Riga along the A6. The journey is short and predictable, so we usually plan several properties in the eastern part of Greater Riga into the same day. That means we give the time as a window, and we let you know when we're on the way.
The town's layout is linear - the railway, the Daugava and the trunk road divide the area into parts, and crossing from one side to the other isn't always as quick as it looks on the map. So if a property involves several buildings at different edges of the town, we plan them as separate visits rather than trying to squeeze everything into one hour.
In blocks of flats we ask about the floor and the lift during the phone call. In system-built blocks with no lift the materials and tools have to be carried up on foot, and that affects how the work is scheduled, not the price. Stairwell windows and shared glazing usually require the consent of the management company or the co-owners - worth sorting out before the measuring visit.
In the detached-house districts and allotment areas there is normally somewhere by the gate to stop close to the entrance. If the access road is narrow or soft underfoot, say so on the form and we'll adjust what we bring and how much of it.
At institutes, offices and warehouses there is one more layer - passes, security and working hours. Some of that work we do in the evenings or at weekends so as not to disturb the people using the space. We agree this during the measuring visit, not on the morning of the job.
