Here the window is usually pointed straight at the valley, and that is exactly why dark film is the wrong answer. We look for the lightest option that cuts the heat and leaves the view intact. Free measuring, from €25/m² including fitting.
We apply film to building glass. That means house windows, flat windows, glazed terraces and balconies, glazing in offices and service premises, guest house rooms, stairwell glazing and door panels. The film goes onto the existing glass from the inside, no building work is required, and the room can be used again the same day.
The two problems we are most often called out for in Sigulda are heat and glare. In the afternoon a room facing south or west warms up to the point where it is unpleasant to be in, and at the same time the sun falls straight onto the television or computer screen. The third common problem is privacy - a ground-floor window on the street, a neighbour's terrace opposite, or a bathroom window that looks directly onto a footpath.
Our experience comes from 15 years and more than 400 completed projects in Riga and the surrounding area. Sigulda falls within our 50 km service radius - right at its outer edge, which is why we plan the trip deliberately; more on that below.

Sigulda's building stock is unlike the flat suburbs around Riga, and that changes what we recommend.
In a great many Sigulda houses the main window or the glazed terrace is deliberately turned towards the slope, the forest or the river. That view has been paid for. Which is exactly why blinds and roller shades are a poor answer to heat here: to do anything at all they have to be closed, and closing them removes the very reason the window is that big in the first place.
Film works differently. It stays on the glass permanently, it is transparent and it hides nothing. So for properties like these we usually recommend solar control film in a lighter tint rather than a dark or strongly reflective one. The result is more moderate than a mirror, but the view stays essentially unchanged - and here that usually matters more than the last few per cent of heat rejection.
When the heat is genuinely severe - roof windows, say, or a fully glazed south-facing terrace - we move to heat rejection film. It cuts more heat, and in places like that slightly darker glass is no hardship.
One further nuance is winter light. When the slope is under snow, the light reflected off that white surface is bright and low, arriving at the window almost horizontally. If there is a workspace by the window, it is worth mentioning during the survey - it affects the choice of tint.
Sigulda is a municipal centre where detached houses sit alongside apartment blocks, council offices, shops, restaurants and tourism venues. Each of them has a different task.
In guest houses and other accommodation the issue is usually overheating in loft-floor and south-facing rooms, along with privacy on the ground floor where a window sits close to a walking path. Here frosted film works well in bathrooms and ground-floor windows - it lets light through but prevents anyone seeing in, by day or in the evening.
In restaurants and retail premises the task is usually a shop window in which nothing can be made out in the afternoon for the reflections, plus stock or interiors losing their colour in the sun. That calls for UV protection film, often together with decorative film or lettering on the glass.
In apartment blocks it is most often a single flat being tinted, more rarely a whole stairwell section. If the film changes the look of the façade from outside, it is worth checking the building's own rules before ordering - we always mention this, because it is easier to find out beforehand than afterwards.
Solar control film - from €25/m². The most typical job: a south or west-facing room that warms up in the afternoon and a large window with a view nobody wants to block. A lighter tint preserves the view, a darker one delivers more effect. More about solar control film.

A typical flat or one floor of a house is finished in a single day. We work indoors, protect the furniture and clear up after ourselves.
For the first few days there may be a slight moisture haze under the film. That is normal and clears by itself. Do not wash the windows during that time.
Because Sigulda is at the edge of our radius, we try to get everything done in one visit. If there are several properties or neighbours involved, we schedule them for the same day.
Distance. We drive out from Riga along the A2, and Sigulda lies at the outer edge of our 50 km service radius. We do not add a call-out charge, but there is a practical recommendation that follows from it: plan everything you need doing in one go. If all the windows in the house can be measured and fitted at the same time, rather than one room now and another in the autumn, both sides come out ahead.
Terrain. The valley and the slopes mean that the height of a window above ground often does not match the number of storeys. A house that is single-storey from the street can be two storeys from the garden. That matters to us, because it determines whether the job needs a ladder, a taller ladder or nothing but indoor access. A photograph of the exterior sent with the enquiry saves a whole trip.
Approach and parking. Some of Sigulda's streets and driveways are narrow, steeply pitched or offer nowhere to turn round. We do not need a space right by the door, but we do need somewhere to leave the vehicle safely while we carry the materials in. If the access is unusual, mention it on the call.
Season. At weekends, on public holidays and during events, traffic in the valley and on the bridges is heavier than usual. We therefore normally schedule work on weekdays, most often in the morning. For hospitality venues we usually suggest the quieter season, when the rooms are not occupied and the work can be done without rushing.
Time of year. Solar film is most often ordered in spring and summer, when the problem is being felt. In practice it can be fitted all year round - in a room that is warm the film adheres just as well in winter, and in winter the wait is usually shorter.
We have no office or branch in Sigulda. We work out of Riga and travel to the property - both for the survey and for the job. That means we plan the route; we do not wait for the customer to come to us.

Yes. The windows of guest houses, restaurants and tourism premises are the same building glass as in a home, just with a different working schedule. With properties like these we usually agree to work outside the busy season or in stages - first the windows of one wing or floor, then the rest. In a room with a single window the job takes a short while, and the room can be used as soon as the film has dried.
The terrain in Sigulda can be steep, and some houses sit on a slope where there is one storey from the street side and two or three from the garden side. If the windows are high above ground level, if there is a glazed terrace on a split level, or if the only approach is a narrow switchback lane, we establish that before the trip. In simple cases photographs and measurements over the phone are enough; in more complicated ones we arrange a free look round. That way we avoid arriving on site with the wrong equipment.
