The word "Dārzciems" in an enquiry tells us less than the name of the street does. This is not a uniform housing estate where it is enough to know the building series and the number of storeys - it is a patchwork. Two streets apart already means two different jobs: a different type of film, a different pace, a different approach to parking.
That is precisely why we first establish what is actually standing there, and only then talk about film. The work itself doesn't change - the film is applied to the building's existing glass, windows are not replaced, frames are not removed, and most properties are finished in a single visit. What changes is which film and for how long. In a system-built flat with modest window openings the reckoning goes by identical spans of glass; in a timber frame divided into small panes, pane by pane. The result in both cases is one of three things: the room becomes cooler, the dazzling brightness disappears, or nobody can see in from the outside any more.
A single day here can take in a three-room flat on the fifth floor, a ground-floor shop unit with a storefront onto the street, and an older house with a glazed veranda - flats, low-rise housing, offices, workshops and warehouse administration space. In Soviet-era system-built blocks the window openings are comparatively small, but there are a lot of windows. That means the logic is the opposite of a new development with glazed walls: here a dark film genuinely makes the room gloomy, especially in the winter half of the year, when there is little enough daylight as it is. In practice the right answer is usually a lighter film with higher light transmission - it helps cut heat and glare without taking the day away from the room.
The top floors under a flat roof have it hardest. There the heat comes both through the window and down from the slab, and on a July afternoon the difference between the top floor and a middle one is noticeable. On the lower floors the question is usually a different one - the window looks onto a courtyard path, a playground or a parking area, and the curtains stay shut all day.
If two or three flats in one stairwell order film at the same time, it is worth doing it together. The façade looks uniform, we work in a single visit, and the €75 minimum order threshold is cleared without a second thought.
A few streets away the picture changes. In the lower and older stock the windows are often in timber frames, divided into smaller panes, with thinner and in places uneven glass, and with old, soft paint along the edges of the frame. A window like that isn't complicated, but it is slower: each pane has to be measured separately, the film cut precisely, and the cleaning fluid must not run into the timber parts. On properties like these we cover sills and floors and work at a different pace.
In the detached-house quarters things appear that don't exist in a system-built block - glazed verandas, large south-facing windows and a garden side with trees that give shade in summer but stop giving it once the leaves have fallen. That is why we don't recommend one film for a whole house; more often the stronger film goes on the sunny side while the north-facing windows are left without.
The practical conclusion is simple: a neighbour's recommendation from the next street may not apply here. Advice that works perfectly in a 1970s block can be quite wrong for an older masonry or timber house two blocks away.
In places the residential stock in Dārzciems runs right up against warehouses, service units and retail premises. There the briefs are different: a storefront that turns into a greenhouse in summer, an office with a view onto the street where privacy is needed during working hours, a frosted band on a glass partition, or a logo on the door. On commercial properties what can be seen from the street is often more important than the temperature - and that is solved with frosted or blackout film over just the area that needs it.
The railway corridor and the busy roads at the edges of the neighbourhood affect not the choice of film but the state of the glass and the access. Windows facing these sides are dustier, so preparation before the film goes on takes more time than on the quiet courtyard side. Film does not reduce noise - we say that openly. Safety film, on the other hand, is chosen for street-facing and ground-floor windows more often here than average, because it holds the shards together if the glass is broken.
The most versatile option for south- and west-facing flats. The lighter version cuts heat and glare without taking the natural light out of the room.
For top floors under a flat roof and glazed verandas in low-rise housing, where temperature is the main problem.
For daytime privacy on ground floors whose windows look onto a courtyard path, a playground or a parking area. In the evening, with the lights on, the effect reverses.
For bathrooms, stairwell windows, panes facing the building next door and partitions in commercial premises. The light stays, the view through does not.
When privacy is needed after dark as well, not just by day - typically for bedrooms on the lower floors and rooms right beside a footpath.

Dārzciema iela, Lubānas iela and the Dienvidu tilts corridor give the neighbourhood good links with the rest of Riga, so getting here is rarely the problem. The problem, when there is one, starts in the last hundred metres. Access in Dārzciems varies from street to street: at some courtyards you can drive almost up to the stairwell door, at others you can't, and materials, tools and rolls of film have to be carried a good deal further by hand.
It doesn't matter to us whether the approach is convenient; what matters is knowing about it in advance. If the courtyard is narrow, the access road unsurfaced, the gates locked or the stairwell without a lift, simply say so in your enquiry or on the phone. Then we allow the right amount of time and bring what is needed, rather than discovering it on arrival.
Another local quirk is the time of day. Traffic at the edges of the neighbourhood is heavy in the morning and evening, so we most often schedule survey visits here for the middle of the day. Driving times in Riga depend on the hour, on roadworks and on the specific address, so we always agree the time on the phone rather than promising it in advance.
In a block of flats a uniform façade is no small matter. If several flats in one stairwell have film fitted, it is worth agreeing on one and the same type - from the street it looks tidy, and for us it means one visit instead of three. A joint order also easily clears the €75 minimum, which can otherwise make a single small window poor value.
Before choosing a strongly reflective film in a block of flats it is worth checking whether the building's own rules restrict changes to the appearance of the façade. With low-rise housing and private houses the question doesn't arise - there the owner decides.
