We fit window film to flats, offices, shops and service premises the full length of Ķengarags, along the right bank of the Daugava. Here the light also comes from below. The surface of the Daugava reflects part of the sun upwards at a shallow angle, and radiation like that slips under the balcony slab, under the cornice and under the canopy - under everything that normally provides shade. So a river-facing room in Ķengarags can be bright and warm even at the hours when the sun no longer shines directly on the pane, and to the resident it looks like an odd contradiction: the sun is round the corner of the building, yet there is still a reflection on the screen and it is still hot by the sill. Blinds will shut it out, but along with the brightness they shut out the view the flat was bought for.
Film solves the same problem without closing anything off. We work with the glass already installed: frames stay in place, windows aren't replaced, and a typical flat is finished in a single visit. Which film, though, depends on which way the window faces - a river-facing room usually suits a lighter option that cuts the brightness while keeping the Daugava in view, whereas on the courtyard side on the ground floor privacy matters more. So we choose window by window rather than for the whole flat at once. Besides flats, in this neighbourhood we regularly tint stairwell and communal windows, small offices, shops, salons, food outlets and outpatient clinic premises.

Ķengarags isn't a single quarter but a ribbon. Two things - its length and the Daugava - shape both the choice of film and the planning of the work.
The neighbourhood is stretched out along Maskavas iela and the Daugava, and the distance from the end nearest the centre to the far end towards Rumbula is a real one. In practical terms that means the word "Ķengarags" in an enquiry tells us too little. If two flats at opposite ends of the neighbourhood are booked for the same day, that is two separate trips rather than one, with the traffic of Maskavas iela, the tram lane and level crossings in between. That is why we ask for the address in the form, not just the name of the neighbourhood.
The second thing the length changes: window orientation isn't uniform along the ribbon either. In places the rows of buildings face the river with their long elevation, in places with the gable end. Two flats of the same series with identical layouts can receive completely different amounts of sun purely because they sit in different stretches of the neighbourhood. You can't read that off a catalogue, so during the survey we always look at which way the particular window faces.
This is a Ķengarags peculiarity that inland neighbourhoods simply don't have. The water surface reflects part of the light upwards at a shallow angle. Reflected radiation like that doesn't arrive from above, so a balcony slab, the edge of a cornice or a canopy won't block it - it comes into the window underneath them. The consequence is that a river-facing room can be bright and warm even when the sun no longer strikes the pane directly, while a room in the same flat on the courtyard side is noticeably cooler at that same moment.
In summer, when the water is smooth, it shows up most vividly as a reflection on the television and computer screen and as warm light raking across the whole room at a low angle. In autumn and spring, when the sun sits lower, the effect is even stronger. Curtains take it away, but they also close off the view.
Which brings us to our practical conclusion: for river-facing windows we usually recommend a lighter film that cuts the brightness and part of the heat while keeping the view over the Daugava. Someone who lives with a river view rarely wants to trade it for closed blinds.
The backbone of the neighbourhood is Soviet-era housing estates, where the window openings are relatively small and numerous, but light reaches the room from one side only. A dark film in a space like that works against itself - the heat drops, but the room is gloomy by September. So here we usually go for a lighter film with higher light transmission, fitted only to the windows that genuinely need it. Top floors under a flat roof usually have the worst of it - the accumulated heat comes in both through the window and down from the roof slab, and that is where the film's effect is most noticeable.
On the courtyard side the windows often look straight onto a footpath, a playground or a parking area, and on the ground floor that means the passer-by sees the room better than the room sees them. Here privacy is just as common a motivation as heat. Among the newer buildings the neighbourhood also has fragments of pre-war development and individual retail and public buildings with completely different glazing - large storefronts, tall windows, divided panes. Those are measured and quoted separately, because the pace of work there is different.
For river-facing rooms troubled by heat and reflected brightness off the water at once. In a lighter grade the view of the Daugava stays.
For top floors under a flat roof and south-facing bedrooms, where the complaint is temperature rather than the view.
For ground-floor windows facing a courtyard path or open space. By day you can't see in; at night, with the lights on inside, the effect reverses.
For bathrooms, stairwell windows and panes facing the building next door. The light stays, the view through does not - at any hour.
Where a window isn't there for the view at all - plant rooms, utility spaces, the back of a shop, a glazed office wall.
For street-level storefronts and glazed doors. Holds the shards together if the glass is broken, so the glazing doesn't collapse onto the pavement.
If it isn't clear in advance which option suits, there is no need to rush the decision. We normally bring samples to the survey and hold them against the actual glass. In Ķengarags that is particularly useful, because one and the same film looks different at a river-facing window and at a courtyard window. UV protection is also worth considering if a window shines onto furniture or floor coverings for hours on end. 5. Installation. A typical flat is finished in a day. We clean the glass, cut the film on site, cover sills and floors, and clear everything away behind us. Full drying takes a few days - during that time you may see slight haziness on the glass, and that is normal.

Ķengarags is within Riga, so no separate call-out fee is charged - the neighbourhood falls within our core working area. But an inner-city distance doesn't make the planning simple. Maskavas iela, the tram line and the railway dictate where you can actually move through here, and driving times vary with the hour of the day and with roadworks. We don't promise an exact minute of arrival; we promise an agreed time window and a call if it changes.
For parking, a space in the courtyard or along the street near the stairwell is enough - we need no machinery, access platform or scaffolding, as all the work is done from inside. We carry materials by hand, so we want to know the floor in advance and whether the stairwell has a lift. In the older buildings there is often no lift at all, and that changes the time plan rather than the price.
If several neighbours within one stairwell want film at the same time, it is worth booking together. Serving several flats in a single visit is quicker, the façade stays uniform from the outside, and the €75 minimum order is cleared without a second thought.
Most enquiries in Ķengarags arrive in May and June, when rooms start to overheat and the reflection off the river becomes noticeable. That is logical, but not always the best move - in early spring and in autumn the diary is freer and the work can be booked at a more convenient time. Film works from day one regardless of when it was fitted.
One more practical point: installation requires the room to be above freezing and the window to be freely accessible. Furniture has to come away from the sill and plants off the window - do that before we arrive and the job goes noticeably faster. We work just as well in winter as in summer, because everything happens from the inside.

On the side nearer the centre that means Krasta rajons, at the far end Rumbula and beyond it Dārziņi, and slightly inland on the railway side Šķirotava. All of these are within our service area, and none of them means we have an office or a permanent team there - we drive out to them.

Choose the right film and the view stays. That is precisely why for river-facing flats we usually recommend a lighter film with higher light transmission rather than a dark or strongly mirrored option. Curtains and blinds solve the problem, but they also close off the very thing the flat was chosen for. Film works all day, doesn't need closing and takes up no space on the sill. During the survey we hold samples against the glass so you can see how the view will look once the work is done.
That risk is real. In Soviet-era system-built blocks the window openings are relatively small, and light reaches the room from one side only. Put a dark film on there and in winter and on overcast days the room turns gloomy - you have simply swapped one problem for another. In practice the best result is usually a lighter film with higher light transmission, fitted only to the windows that genuinely need it. The exceptions are bathrooms and stairwell windows, where privacy matters more than light.
We carry materials and tools by hand, so we need to know the floor in advance and whether the stairwell has a lift and whether it is working. A roll, trestles and a bucket of water carried up the stairs to a top floor simply take longer, and that is better planned in from the start than discovered on site. On top floors under flat roofs the heat is usually at its worst, which is exactly where the film's effect is most noticeable. For parking, a space in the courtyard or along the street is all we need - no machinery or access platform is involved.
