The building stock of the neighbourhood is mixed - pre-war timber and masonry houses, blocks of flats, hospital and medical complexes, industrial properties. Below, each type separately, because the solutions for them do not coincide.
The residential stock here isn't uniform. One block can hold a pre-war masonry building with tall, finely divided windows, next to it a timber house with thin, in places wavy glass, and a little further on an ordinary block of flats with standard panes. So the first thing we establish during the survey is how the window is built: how many panes, how thick the glass, what condition the frame is in and how much room there is out to the glazing bead. A building with many small panes is priced pane by pane and takes more time than a window of the same width made up of a single sheet.
The other thing that recurs here is the ground floor. In the older stock the windows often sit low against the pavement or the courtyard path, and in the evening a lit room is fully visible from the street. The typical situation is that the curtains stay drawn all day - and that is exactly what film prevents, keeping the light while removing the view in from outside.
Healthcare is one of the neighbourhood's core functions, and medical premises contain a lot of glass - not only in the façade but inside as well. Reception screens, consulting-room doors, corridor partitions and treatment-room windows. The requirement there is twofold: the patient must not be visible, but the room must not become dark and closed off. Blinds solve the first and spoil the second, and on top of that they gather dust and have to be cleaned.
Frosted film addresses this brief directly. The light passes through diffused, silhouettes disappear, and the room stays visually open. On internal glazed doors and partitions it often goes on across the whole plane; on consulting-room and ground-floor windows, up to roughly eye level, leaving the upper part clear so that the sky and the daylight remain in view. If zone markings, room numbers or warning bands are needed on clear glass, we cut them from the frosted film; such work is quoted individually.
What also matters in practice is that the work takes place in premises that are in use. We split it by room or by floor so that only part of the space is out of use at any one time, and we apply the film with a water and soap solution that has no sharp smell.
The port, production plants, warehouses and service premises make up the other half of the neighbourhood. There the briefs are different: an office section with large glazed areas that overheats on the south side; ground-floor windows or storefronts on the street where the contents of the space aren't meant to be on show; stairwell and corridor glazing that needs nothing more than simple opacity. In the production and warehouse part safety film is ordered more often - it holds the shards together if the glass is broken, and it is chosen as part of ordinary building maintenance practice.
Access at properties like these is usually good: wide doors, easy parking, room for ladders where height is involved. The trickier part is often the schedule rather than the glass itself - we plan the work around shifts or at weekends if the space can't be freed up on a working day.
The nearness of the port and industry, the railway and the busy roads give the neighbourhood a context of its own. That doesn't mean every property here has some problem - it means only that the glass facing the street tends to be dirtier, and the preparation before the film goes on takes longer. Film must not go onto imperfectly cleaned glass: a speck of dust left underneath is visible for good.
It is also worth saying honestly what film does not do. It is not sound insulation and it is not a solution for dust. It works on light, heat, ultraviolet radiation, visibility and the safety of the glass - and that is all we talk about in the quote.
The neighbourhood's most frequent solution. For consulting-room doors, internal partitions, reception glazing, bathrooms and ground-floor panes. The light stays, the view through does not.
When privacy is needed around the clock, including in the evening with the lights on - for treatment rooms and windows right beside the pavement or a courtyard path.
For the south and west sides - upper-floor flats and office space with large glazed areas. Cuts heat and glare while keeping the view.
For daytime privacy on the lower floors and in street-facing rooms. In older masonry stock we suggest weighing up a strongly reflective option carefully - it changes the look of the façade.

For timber joinery, parquet and furniture in older buildings, and for rooms where materials or documents are kept by a window and must not fade.
If it isn't clear which option suits, there is no need to decide in advance. At the survey we normally bring samples and hold them against the actual glass - the difference between two densities of frosting on a consulting-room door, or between two degrees of lightness in a flat window, is better seen on site than read in a description. 3. Free on-site measuring. We come out, measure every pane separately, look at the frames, the condition of the glass and the access, and show you samples. In the older buildings this step often also settles which windows don't need film or shouldn't have it.
4. A fixed price. The quote covers film and labour together, excl. VAT. The price doesn't change afterwards as long as the scope of work doesn't.
5. Installation. A typical flat or a single group of consulting rooms is finished in a day. We clean the glass, cut the film on site, cover sills and floors, and clear everything away afterwards. The film takes a few days to dry out fully - during that time you may see slight haziness or tiny water bubbles on the glass, and that is normal.

We carry materials and tools to the property by hand. In the older blocks of flats there is often no lift, the stairwells are narrow, and on the upper floors the work starts later than it would in a new building. That is no problem when we know about it in advance - simply state the floor and whether there is a lift. The same goes for a key code or entryphone at the door, and for whether there is anywhere in the courtyard to stop while we unload.

Clinics, consulting rooms, salons and offices can rarely stop for a whole day. So we split the work: one room or one floor at a time, so that the rest carries on operating. One set of glazed consulting-room doors or one plane of partition we complete within part of a day. If the rooms are only free early in the morning or after appointments finish, we plan it that way.
In flats it is simpler, but two things are useful to know in advance: whether the sills are loaded with plants and possessions that have to be lifted off, and whether any window already has old film on it. Removing old film is separate work - it usually comes away in pieces, and the adhesive has to be scraped off completely before we fit the new film.

For this brief frosted film works better than blinds. It diffuses the light but stops anyone making out what is happening in the room - and unlike closed blinds, the room doesn't end up dark and shut off. In practice we most often frost the lower part of the window up to roughly eye level, or the whole plane of a glazed door or partition, leaving the top clear. If wayfinding signs or numbers are needed on the glass as well, we handle that with cut elements of frosted film, and it is quoted individually.
Often it can, but the glass has to be looked at on site first. In pre-war timber buildings the panes tend to be small and numerous, the glass thin and in places wavy, and the paint along the edges of the frame old and soft. During the survey we check the condition of the glass, the layers of the frame and the distance out to the glazing bead. Windows like these are priced pane by pane, and the work goes more slowly than with a single large sheet. If film isn't advisable for a particular window, we say so before the work, not after it.
Film is not a solution for dust and it doesn't stop dirt - the outside of the glass carries on getting dirty just the same. What it does change is what you see: on frosted or tinted glass, uneven deposits and streaks catch the eye less than on clear glass, and the inner face stays easier to keep clean. The nearness of the port and industry mainly affects the preparation here - the glass is washed more thoroughly before the film goes on, and sometimes twice.

By day it is. Mirror film works while it is brighter outside than in the room, so in the evening, with the lights on indoors, the effect reverses. If the window is right beside the pavement, a courtyard path or a stairwell entrance and privacy is needed around the clock, the safer choice is frosted or blackout film on the lower pane. Often the best option is a combination: frosted glass below, a lighter solar control film above.
