Jūrmala is a single city only in name on the map. A timber house in Ķemeri, a flat in Kauguri, a veranda in Bulduri and a guesthouse in Majori are, in practical terms, four different worksites with different glass, different access and a different time of day at which the sun becomes a problem at all. So we don't plan this city as one point, and the neighbourhood you name in your enquiry means as much to us as the address itself.
The other thing that is different here is the light. Pale sand and the surface of the water throw the glare upwards, and in a sea-facing window the brightness is often a nuisance earlier and more acutely than the heat - on a winter afternoon with a low sun, even more so than in July. Our work is applying film to the glass already in the building: the windows are not taken out, the frames are not touched, and a medium-sized property is usually finished in one visit. What that delivers in a particular room - less heat, less glare or privacy from outside - depends on which way the window faces and how much water or sand it sees.
The season decides the rest. Hotels, guesthouses and cafés most often book the work outside the busy months, while summer houses and part-year homes get done when the owner is on site. Almost every kind of building stock exists here in one city, and each one calls for a different film.
Timber villas and old summer houses are the most characteristic part of Jūrmala. The panes tend to be small and numerous, the frames narrow, the glass thin and here and there slightly rippled, and the paint along the edges of the frame old and soft. A window like that isn't complicated, but it takes time: every pane has to be measured individually, the film cut precisely, and no water or cleaning solution can be allowed to run into the timber parts of the frame. On properties like these we protect the floors and window sills and work more slowly. We factor that into the quote at the measuring stage, so there are no surprises later.
Houses like these are often used for only part of the year. That means the work has to fit around the owner's arrival, or around someone who holds the keys. It's worth mentioning in your enquiry straight away.
In newer and renovated houses, large glass walls, sliding doors and glazed terraces face the sea. These are the rooms that overheat most in summer. A glazed veranda with glazing on several sides warms up quickly and the air has nowhere to escape - sometimes you can't use it at precisely the hours it was built for.
The other thing that sets this apart from Riga is reflected light. Pale sand, water and a low sun over the sea produce a brightness that arrives not only from above but from below and from the sides as well. Even a north-west window can be uncomfortable. Pine forest on the other side gives diffuse shade that stays constant year-round, doing little for the heat but making the light uneven.
In practice this means that in Jūrmala the choice of film is more often made on brightness than on temperature alone. Which is why we don't usually put the same film on every window in a house.
Apartment housing is as real a part of Jūrmala as the villas by the dunes. There the briefs are closer to the ordinary: an overheating south or west aspect, sun on the television and computer screens, faded furniture, and ground-floor windows that passers-by look into. This work usually takes a day, and in an apartment block it is worth checking whether the building's rules restrict changes to the appearance of the façade if you go for a distinctly reflective film.
Plots close to the sea often sit along footpaths and dune crossings, and in summer the flow of people is heavy. At the same time many properties are tightly packed - the window looks straight onto the neighbour's terrace. Curtains solve it, but they also take away the very view the house was bought for. The usual choice here is reflective film on the lower floors, or frosted film on specific panes, leaving the rest of the windows clear.
The most versatile answer for large sea-facing glazed planes. Cuts heat and glare at the same time while keeping the view of the dunes.
For glazed verandas, terraces and roof glazing, where the problem is the temperature rather than being seen from outside.
Daytime privacy on lower floors beside footpaths and in densely built streets. At night, with the lights on inside, the effect reverses.
For bathrooms, stairwell windows and panes facing the neighbours. The light stays, the view through does not - whatever the time of day.
For timber interiors, parquet and fabrics in the older villas, and for hotel rooms where the furnishings mustn't fade.
For properties left empty over the winter and for ground-floor shopfronts. Holds the shards together if the glass is broken.

We normally bring samples to the measuring visit and hold them against the glass in question - in Jūrmala that is particularly useful, because the same film looks noticeably different at a sea-facing window and at one facing the woods. 2. A call within 5 minutes. We get in touch and talk the situation through. Often it becomes clear during that call which type of film is right and roughly what it will cost.
3. Free measuring. We come out, measure every pane, look at the frames and the access, and show you samples. In Jūrmala this step usually also settles which windows don't need film at all.
4. A fixed price. The quote covers the film and the labour together, excl. VAT. The price doesn't change afterwards unless the scope of the work does.
5. Installation. A typical flat or medium-sized house is finished in a day. We wash the glass, cut the film on site, protect the sills and floor, and clear everything away behind us. The film takes a few days to dry out completely - during that time you may see slight hazing on the glass, and that is normal.

Majori, Bulduri, Kauguri and Ķemeri are not one point on the map - driving from one end to the other takes real time. So we try to schedule properties close to one another on the same day, and the neighbourhood named in your enquiry matters to us as much as the address.
We drive to Jūrmala from Riga along the A10; the city falls within our 50 km service radius, and no separate call-out fee is charged. In summer the traffic and the parking closer to the beach are noticeably busier than in winter, so in the warm season we usually schedule jobs in the central neighbourhoods for the morning. In winter it isn't an issue at all.
We carry the materials and tools to the property by hand, so it matters to us how close to the building we can get. Narrow streets, sandy access roads, gates and stairwells without a lift are all perfectly normal - just tell us in advance and we'll plan the time accordingly.
A significant share of Jūrmala's properties are used for only part of the year. That raises two practical points. First, the work has to be timed for when someone is there or has the keys; we're happy for a managing agent or a neighbour to let us in, provided it's arranged beforehand. Second, in an empty house the glass is often dusty or carries salt and sand deposits, so the preparation takes longer than in a lived-in flat.
For hotels, guesthouses, cafés and salons it is usually better to book the work outside the peak season. The rooms are then free, there's no working around guests and the job doesn't have to be broken into pieces. We can also phase it by floor or by wing if the property is partly in use.

In most cases yes, but the glass has to be looked at first. Old timber-framed windows often have thin, slightly rippled glass, fine cracking and soft, aged paint along the edges of the frame. During the measuring visit we check the condition of the glass, the layers of paint on the frame and how much room there is up to the glazing bead. If the glass is damaged or film isn't advisable in a particular window, we tell you before the work, not after it.
A glazed veranda or terrace with roof glazing is one of the most common jobs in houses like these. The sun comes in from several directions and there is nowhere for the air to go. In practice the best result comes from heat rejection or reflective film on the sunniest sections rather than on all of them at once. During the measuring visit we look at which glazed planes take the most direct sun and propose an option that doesn't leave the room too dark.

Pale sand and the surface of the water reflect a great deal of light, and in sea-facing windows the glare is often more of a nuisance than the temperature itself. Film reduces the amount of light coming through and the reflections on screens while keeping the view out.
